Difference between system software and operating system.

 System software :

System Software is the most important type of software required to administer the resources of the computer system.

System software runs and functions internally with application software and hardware. Moreover, it works as a linking interface between a hardware device and the end-user.

System software runs in the background and manages all functioning of the computer itself. It is called Low-Level Software as it runs at the most basic level of computer and is usually written in a low-level language. As soon as we install the operating system on our device, it gets automatically installed on the same device.

System software helps to generate the user interface and allows the operating system to interact with the computer hardware.


Operating system :

An operating system is a system Software that manage computer hardware,Software resources and provide common services for computer program. An operating system is a Set of instruction or program that manage the computer hardware. An operating system is Intermediat between computer and the hardware.

An operating system with the allocation of resources and services such as memory, processor,device and information. An operating system currusponding include to program mange there resources such as traffic controller, schedular, memory management, Input output program and file system.

System software manages the system.

Operating System manages system as well as system software.

Types of System Software-


  • Operating Systems- MS Windows, Mac OS, Linux, etc.

  • Device Drivers- Display drivers, USB drivers, etc.

  • Firmware- BIOS, Embedded Systems, etc.

  • Language Translators- Compiler, Interpreter, Assembler

  • Utility- Antivirus software, WinRAR, etc.

  • Batch Operating System

  • Multiprocessing Operating System

  • Multiprogramming Operating System

  • Multi Tasking Operating System

  • Time Sharing Operating System

  • Real-Time Operating System

  • Distributed Operating System

  • Network Operating System

It’s run only when required.

It runs all the time.

It loads in the main memory whenever required. 

It resides in the main memory all the time while the system is on.

It is loaded by the operating system.

Examples of system software are MacOS, Android, and Microsoft windows.

Examples of OS are Windows, OS X, and Linux.
